EDF Trading and Chubu to collaborate on coal procurement and trading in Japan

EDF Trading and Chubu Electric Power Company have today announced they will establish a new coal business, Chubu Energy Trading, based in Nagoya, Japan.

Chubu Energy Trading will procure and deliver coal for Chubu Electric Power Company’s power station in Hekinan, Japan. It will also establish physical and financial coal trading with wholesale counterparties in the Asia Pacific region.

Chubu Energy Trading will use EDF Trading’s experience in the coal and freight markets and its successful business model to optimise Chubu’s coal and freight positions, hedge its exposure and secure coal supply. EDF Trading, the wholesale trading subsidiary of the EDF Group, secures and optimises coal and freight supply for the Group in France and the UK as well as for other European utilities.

“As Japanese utilities face increased pressure in the wholesale energy markets, we are pleased to bring EDF Trading’s commercial and risk management experience to our partnership with Chubu”, said Philippe Torrion, CEO of EDF Trading. "We look forward to building a long-term relationship.”

Chubu Energy Trading will commence business in early 2008.

About EDF Trading
EDF Trading is the interface to the wholesale energy markets for the EDF Group. We buy and sell electricity, emissions, natural gas, coal, freight, biomass, and oil.

EDF Trading is one of the largest electricity traders in Europe, a leading European gas trader, and an active participant in the global market for liquefied natural gas. We've traded in the EU emissions market since it began and are one of the top buyers of carbon credits from Clean Development Mechanism projects around the world. We also work alongside coal-fired power generators to provide biomass procurement, logistical and technical support.

Our global coal and freight business handles around 30 million tonnes of coal annually. As a significant importer of coal into Europe, we play an important role in arranging the EDF Group’s coal supply requirements in France and the UK. We also have numerous long-term supply contracts with major European utilities. In July 2007 EDF Trading acquired a coal terminal business in the Port of Amsterdam, the centre of European coal imports. Our fleet of vessels and inland logistics business support our coal activities. With multiple sources of coal supply worldwide and the ability to store, blend and deliver coal, we offer comprehensive supply chain management from loading port to power plant gate.

EDF Trading is a 100% owned subsidiary of EDF, Europe’s largest power utility and a group active in all areas of the energy sector including generation, transmission, distribution and supply.
