Why did you apply for an internship at EDFT?

As an engineering student who specialised in energy that was also interested in exploring the world of finance, I applied to EDFT because it felt like a natural intersection. EDFT stood out to me in particular due to its connection to the energy heavyweight EDF. It offered exposure to all aspects of the European energy markets due to EDFTs wide-ranging activities, and there was also the opportunity of progression onto a competitive graduate programme.

Does your graduate role allow much autonomy?

From the get-go I have been given much more autonomy than I expected fresh out of university. In my first rotation in Power Analytics, I was tasked with building a solar model – working closely with senior analysts who taught me a lot and guided the project, but also having the remit to propose and test my own ideas which are now in production! And now, a year later, on the Spanish Power desk I'm being given the independence to come up with my own trade ideas and trade them based on my own judgement. The company encourages you to be creative and make your thoughts heard whilst always challenging and building upon your ideas.

EDF Trading is a very academic institution – you are surrounded by market experts, many of whom hold PHDs, and they are always willing to share their expertise

What is the best thing about working for EDFT?

I would say two things. The relatively small size of the company and its meritocratic culture means that you can make tangible contributions to the business, even at a junior level. Your work and ideas feel appreciated here, which is very motivating. Secondly, I find it a very academic institution – you are surrounded by market experts, many of whom hold PHDs, and they are always willing to share their expertise. There is a goldmine of understanding at EDFT for you to absorb.
